Understanding dry eye

Find out why eyes can feel dry, how the tear film is evaluated and how care is matched to the cause.

When the tear film needs support

Burning, grittiness, redness, light sensitivity and fluctuating blur can all occur with dry eye. Some eyes also water when irritated. Dry eye can develop when the eyes make too little watery tear fluid, when tears evaporate too quickly, or when several problems affect the tear film together. 1; 2

Finding the cause

An evaluation may include a discussion of symptoms, medications, contact lenses and daily activities, followed by examination of the eye surface and eyelids. The clinician may check tear production, how quickly the tear film breaks up and surface irritation using diagnostic dye. These findings help distinguish tear deficiency, eyelid disease and other causes of discomfort. 1; 3

Building a treatment plan

Treatment can include lubricating drops, prescription medication, eyelid care and changes that reduce exposure to dry air, wind or prolonged screen use. The combination depends on the examination. Discuss medications with your clinician rather than stopping them yourself. 1

Care is selected for the condition found on examination. Meibomian-gland-focused care and IPL address selected gland-related problems; Xdemvy is a prescription treatment for diagnosed Demodex blepharitis. Serum tears and amniotic membranes are additional options for appropriately selected patients.

When the eye surface needs more help

  • Serum tears are blood-derived eye drops used for selected patients whose eye-surface disease needs additional support. Autologous serum tears use the patient's own blood and contain proteins and growth factors found in natural tears. Preparation, refrigeration, freezing and discard instructions matter because contamination can cause infection. Your clinician and dispensing service will explain the specific regimen. 4
  • Amniotic membrane is processed, donated placental tissue that can serve as a temporary protective covering to support healing of a damaged or inflamed eye surface. Its use depends on the condition being treated. The clinician explains placement, follow-up and product-specific risks, including the residual infection-transmission risk associated with donor tissue. 5

What to expect

Dry-eye care often needs ongoing maintenance and adjustments. The aim is better comfort, a healthier surface and more stable vision; improvement and timing vary. Tell your clinician when symptoms continue to interfere with reading, work, driving or contact-lens wear. 6

When to seek urgent care

Arrange an eye examination for persistent or worsening symptoms. Sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain, marked light sensitivity or an eye injury needs urgent assessment. A painful red eye in a contact-lens wearer also needs prompt care; remove the lenses and seek advice rather than assuming it is dry eye. 7; 8; 9
